After inspecting the home, our Project Consultant Greg recommended a full roof replacement so we could rebuild the system from the plywood up. No more repairs, we wanted to give Alan's roof the full service it deserved. Our crew removed and disposed of all of the metal panels, which allowed us to evaluate the condition of the framing and give the deck a clean base to work from. From there, we installed new plywood decking across the entire roof and renailed the whole deck using 8d Ring-Shank nails to make sure everything was solid and tied together properly. Once the structure was secure, we covered the complete roof with full SealoronXT Ice&Water, which will seal the plywood boards and not allow any water to make its way onto the wooden deck, causing soft spots and leaks. This gives the metal roofing the protection it needs in harsh New England weather. Deciding on a roof replacement, our team got to work. For both the home and garage, we stripped away the old roofing system and began fresh. The solution for this historic farmhouse began with tearing off the old cedar roof and replacing it with durable asphalt shingles. Since the house had skip sheathing, which needs to breathe, we installed a plywood deck over it—an essential upgrade. To solve the ventilation problem, we implemented a super roof hybrid. Although additional insulation wasn't necessary, we needed the house to breathe, so we installed batt insulation and created a 3/4-inch separation between the base roof and the new roof to allow airflow. We added SmartVent ventilation at the eaves to let air flow under the roof and installed ridge vents at the top to allow proper ventilation throughout the entire roof system.

Because the roof level was raised, we addressed the siding attachment by adding a freeze board where the siding hadn't been redone in about 30 years. We replaced the older, unattractive siding with new clapboard siding, enhancing the home’s appearance. Finally, we installed 50-year asphalt shingles, providing a long-lasting and more cost-effective solution. We also added Gutter Shutter, and since then, no water has entered the home. Standing tall in Rocky Hill, CT is the VFW: Post 2138, a building that has housed and benefited veterans for many years. Located on Main Street, it has supported veterans all across Connecticut and is a landmark for visitors and tourists.

Through shared experiences and the “buddy-buddy” program, veterans are connected by speaking openly or privately about what troubles them in their daily life. The importance of support, whether verbally or physically, is a concept that the VFW does not take lightly. Being safe is not an option; it’s a necessity.

Donating a Roof to a Veteran in West Hartford, CT

For Klaus Larsen, the United States military holds a special place in his heart. When the Nazis occupied his home country of Denmark in April 1940, life for his family was forever changed. They lived under Nazi rule until the end of the war in 1945, and now, as Klaus puts it, “American Independence Day, the Fourth of July, is celebrated in Denmark with enthusiasm that rivals celebrations in the US.”

It’s the third veteran he has helped through his Santa Klaus Project, with the goal of helping many more deserving veterans and civilians alike with roof repair and replacement and other home improvements that are needed but out of reach for them.

Klaus came to the United States in the ’90s with $300 in his pocket and built his namesake brand, Klaus Larsen LLC, with the goal of being much more than a roofing company. It is about social and environmental responsibility as much as the economic bottom line. “I’m living in a free country that allows me... to succeed. And this freedom comes at a price,” says Klaus. That price couldn’t be more personal for him, and giving back to those who sacrificed for this freedom is truly an honor.

Brian Flanagan is the veteran to whom we are donating this full roof replacement to. Before and after graduating from Cheshire High School in 1998, Brian Flannigan had his heart set on joining the military. He joined the Connecticut Army National Guard in 1999.

Now a family-oriented man, Brian and his wife Chelsea, two-year-old son Jack, and 11-month old Hunter, moved into their West Hartford home in December of 2017. Brian noted that 2017 was the hardest year of his life. After moving and changing jobs, he found it hard to stay positive. Asbestos was found in the home after cleaning the air ducts. The money set aside by Brian and Chelsea had to be used for asbestos removal and the roof would have to come later.

The solar company Brian works for, Sunrun, is based out of Hartford, CT. While working there, he met Vietnam veteran Ron Catania. After Brian and Ron began talking, Ron hinted that he had a solution for Brian’s failing roof. That’s when Klaus Larsen was contacted by Klingberg Family Centers, located in New Britain. Klingberg was able to connect Klaus with Brian and his family. On the morning of the installation, Brian was still in shock that it was all happening. His appreciation for what was being done for him was shown through wide eyes and smiles all around.

Beginning at 7:30 in the morning on Tuesday, April 17, a crew of five roofers from Klaus Larsen began to strip and install the Flannigan family’s new roof. After about five hours of work, the crew was done and the new roof was installed.

Donating a roof to a veteran is something that is very near and dear to Klaus Larsen. Being from Denmark, his father was part of the Danish Resistance during WWII. He feels that he owes his freedom to America for helping out Denmark during a time of need.

The team at Klaus Larsen not only donated the roof but teamed up with West Hartford restaurant Luna Pizza, who donated pizza to feed the crew and Brian’s family. The amount of love and support throughout this whole project has been an uplifting feeling. Not only does it feel great to give back but it is wonderful to see how many people are supportive of the cause.

Klaus Larsen, an immigrant from Denmark who founded a successful roofing company in Hebron, CT, has a goal of giving back to the country and community that allowed this success by donating one roof to a deserving local veteran family. The donation of this roof was also made possible by Klingberg Family Centers, with whom Klaus works very closely with. They were able to find this Veteran for us to donate the roof too.

Hebron Roofer to Donate Roof to WWII Veteran for 2nd Official Santa Klaus Project

This project is dedicated to all those who fought and sacrificed for the freedom that both Danish and American citizens enjoy today.

Clayton Chalfant is now 92 years old, and not only is it time to give him a new roof. It’s also time for us to honor him and his service. On November 12, 2016, Veterans Day weekend, the Westport Fire Department and Veterans of Foreign Wars will be on hand to support Klaus Larsen LLC in stripping and re-shingling Clayton’s home by telling everyone who stops by about what he means to his hometown and country. This project also honors the legacy of Klaus’ father and uncle, and all who have fought and continue to fight and sacrifice for freedom.

As Clayton‘s granddaughter Christine recently put it, “My family is so excited and grateful for this project to help my grandparents. I was able to FaceTime with my grandfather last night to tell him the wonderful news and the smile across his face was priceless; for once he was actually speechless! Many happy tears were shed last night from everyone!”.

Homecoming BBQ for Returning Combat Veteran

On Tuesday, August 16, prior to his homecoming, Klaus Larsen, LLC installed a new roof on Dave’s home as part of their community initiative, the Santa Klaus Project. It was a race against time with thunderstorms looming throughout the day and a beehive of activity outside, as Jeremy Minter, an Iraq War Veteran and project coordinator for Klaus Larsen, LLC, led his team of installers to complete the roof by days end.

On Friday, September 16, 2016, Klaus Larsen and local veterans will be celebrating Dave’s homecoming with a BBQ hosted by local pig roast master Pete the Butcher. For event details, visit santaklausproject.org. It will be an opportunity to thank him for all that he’s done for this country, and a chance to meet and celebrate with him. This is a true community effort, with local companies like Avery Soda, Sweet Claude’s Ice Cream, Gagnon Signs, and Suburban Sanitation Services, as well as local banks and national corporations, all contributing to support this effort. The US Veterans Motorcycle Club, who’s efforts have focused on helping fellow veterans, will also have a strong presence.

SFC Dave Colafati served honorably as an infantry platoon squad leader and is a seasoned combat veteran. Dave served two combat tours in Afghanistan, and as a leader, continues to process and reflect on the things he and his fellow Soldiers had experienced. Additionally, several of these warriors chose taking their own lives after returning home, one of which was a true friend to Dave. On September 16th, Sergeant First Class Dave Colafati will celebrate his homecoming from a nine-month deployment to the Middle East AND his much-needed new roof, provided by Klaus Larsen, LLC. Through his Santa Klaus Project, Larsen is providing SFC Colafati a "home sweet home" environment while the Sergeant re-establishes his family bonds and reintegrates into his personal and work civilian life.

SFC Dave Colafati is a very humble, unassuming man with a huge sense of compassion. He served honorably as an infantry platoon squad leader and is a seasoned combat veteran. Dave served two combat tours in Afghanistan, and as a leader, continues to process and reflect on the things he and his fellow Soldiers had experienced. Additionally, several of these warriors chose to take their own lives after returning home, one of which was a true friend to Dave. This event is also intended to serve as a reminder of the importance of thanking our veterans in the most appropriate and meaningful ways, ensuring access to PTSD treatment when needed, and supporting veteran suicide awareness and prevention. Now finishing his third deployment, Dave is returning to his 16-year-old son Tristan, who he continues to raise with Melody, a woman he considers to be “the best ex-wife a guy could ask for.”
