We got a call in from Providence, RI, to evaluate a roof for storm damage, following a proposal from the customer’s insurance company. Our customers often like to have roofers come out to give a second opinion, as roofers tend to spot things an appraiser may not. The initial proposal called for a partial roof replacement due to blown off shingles on one side of the roof. When Lorenzo got there, the houses were so close together that it was difficult to get on the roof or inspect it properly from the ground. So, Lorenzo used his drone to take a closer look. Upon inspection, Lorenzo spotted more loose shingles on the other side of the roof. Since shingles were loose on both sides of the roof as opposed to just one, the insurance altered their quote to cover a full roof replacement!

This immaculately well taken care of home was suffering from a leaky 30-year-old chimney. Instead of a simple repair, the customer wanted to completely rip off the old flashing, and replace it with copper flashing, instead of the traditional lead flashing. He also wanted a cricket built on the backside of the chimney in copper as well. Lead is the industry standard and can easily be bent and manipulated to suit the dimensions of the chimney. Copper is rigid, more expensive, and is often thought of as the cosmetic option. This type of job is very difficult, and the installer needs to know what they are doing, that's why they called in Klaus Larsen Roofing!

These gutters in Johnston, RI were in severe need of a replacement! Upon inspection, the customer decided to replace the roof and the gutters.

This homeowner called us about her gutters, and we ended up talking about gutters, attic insulation, air sealing, and roof repairs on top of that. The homeowner walked our rep around the house, showing him the water coming down the gutters like a waterfall. When our rep went up there, he found that when the siding was done and the gutters were reattached, they were attached too low and the drip edge was compromised due to the vinyl siding installation. Water was going behind the gutters and down the fascia, as if she didn’t have any gutters at all. To further prove this point, our rep was allowed access to the basement and noticed some white chalky residue on the foundation left behind by the minerals in the water coming in. Decades of water cascading down the foundation could eventually cause erosion and be dangerous for the structural integrity of the house. Our rep also walked on the roof to check everything else and noticed that the cricket on her chimney was placed backward and the flashing wasn’t done right. There was water inside the chimney flue but not around the mantle or ceiling yet. In the attic, you could see it was leaking like crazy, the wood was rotted out, there was mold around it and it needed to be replaced. The homeowner had no idea, as no one else had gotten up on the roof! We were lucky we caught it before it affected inside of her home. Ironically, the insulation was catching all the water!

This roof was old, and the heated gutter covers they added to help eliminate ice dams were not helping! The roof was still leaking into his house because the culprit was inadequate attic insulation, which is often the case. A new roof can prevent the problem from affecting the house but cannot fix it entirely. There were also condensation issues in the attic due to the AC unit, and it was causing mold that also circulated throughout the house! The best thing to do in this case, besides remove the AC from the attic, was to spray-foam the ductwork to prevent condensation in the future and reduce the effort the AC has to put out to cool the rest of the home. The homeowner didn’t know he had all these problems initially; he was just calling about leaks!

This was a very unique, old home that was 800 square feet and made from fieldstone. The homeowner had lived there as a child and recently inherited it. She didn’t have an attic, and he had very poorly done rolled roofing on. There were lots of undulations in the roofing as well as footprints! It was 40 years old, and she was ready to get rid of her rolled roofing and put shingles on!

This multi-family home had blown off shingles due to wind damage and a flat roof portion of the roof that was tarped due to the storm! Her roof was 22 years old, and it was already tarped, leaking, and in rough shape.

At this home in Rumford, RI, our sales rep was there for five hours. He pushed their little girl on the swings, examined the roof, and even fixed a wayward shingle on the playhouse. In Mapleville, RI a tree had fallen on this home and left some holes in the roof. Unfortunately, the roof was so old it was not something that we could simply replace. Half of the roof was covered by insurance, however, so it was an ideal time to get the entire roof replaced.

When we visited this home in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, there was already a tarp on their roof. The homeowners had been working with their insurance for 5 months!
